OUGD103-Speaking from experience

What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

For the don't panic, vogue brief I worked well with a limited amount of time. I found I got my posters done quickly. For 'Communication is a virus' I worked well being paired together with someone else. My partner was Naomi and we worked well together as we were both punctual and we both discussed what work would be done by each of us and got it done with no problems. We decided to screen print for part of this brief which we made sure we had enough time to do as it does take a long time. For 'Speaking from experience I managed my time well by using timetables and giving myself a certain amount of time for research, resolution, blog etc.

What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

For 'Speaking from experience I did a lot of research on cartoon characters and developed my own characters. Through doing this research I found I no longer wanted to use illustrations for my work as they weren't working. By doing this research it helped me come to this conclusion.

For both 'Speaking from experience' and 'Communication is a virus' I made a questionnaire and sent them online and gave them out. This was a really useful way of collecting research.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I have improved on managing my time through timetables which helped me a lot so I will using this method from now on. I have done a lot of variations for my work which helped me decide which works look the best, I will also be doing this from now on. I have improved on posting my work to my blog and posting work that has inspired me and given me ideas to my design context blog.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?

I have been analysing my work more in this module, more towards the final brief but I would like to improve on this further so I am going to give myself more time evaluate next module.

Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

  1. Give myself more time to analyse and evaluate my work I would therefore has more time at the end to finish things off.

  2. Keep my research ongoing rather than more at the beginning and not as much throughout. This would give me a broader range of research.

  3. Ask for more help when printing my work off. A few pages from my comic book for 'Speaking from experience' came out wrong, I ended up wasting a lot of time and money trying to reprint these correctly.

  4. Get all my work printed out the correct size to fit the brief. My vogue posters are printed in A3 when they are supposed to be A2 because I didn't have the time to print them out bigger in the print room.

  5. Give myself more time to correct mistakes I have made. Also whilst printing my comic book I realised I had made a few mistakes on the book and the stickers. I managed to correct these mistakes but unfortunately I couldn't reprint the stickers.

How would you grade yourself on the following areas:

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

OUGD103-Speaking from experience

Speaking from experience- Self evaluation

What problem did you identify?
Living with flatmates who lie, steal, are messy or loud etc. To deal with it in a comical, easy going way to show that it isn't that bad and can be funny.

What evidence did you find to support your decisions?
I conducted an online survey asking students if they have any stories about their flatmates and found that pretty much everyone had a story to tell.

What methods did you use to gather your evidence and what forms did it take?
Primary research
The stories i received from the questionnaire formed the basis of my comic book. I also found out some more stories just from speaking to people.

Secondary research
I went into a few different shops that sold comic books and brought a few to look at layout, colour, type and to see the type of stock the book was printed onto. I also had my mum send me some really old beano's. This helped me to see that the style they use is always the same and i wanted mine to look like this.
I also got out a few books from the library on comic books.

I found out that, to get their revenge, they used 'prank jokes'. I therefore researched a load of practical jokes, using the internet, and chose 7 to use in my comic book.

What methods of research did you find useful and why?
I found the questionnaire very useful as i got a lot of responses so it showed that the problem i was trying to identify was relevant to the brief.
Also looking through different books, i started off by illustrating the comic strips but found it wasn't working so i went on to use photography instead which worked a lot better.

How did these inform your response to your problem?
Once i knew i was going to use practical jokes as a way of getting revenge i had the idea to make the stories into comic strips keeping them in context of being light hearted and comical. I also knew now that i didn't want to use illustrations but photography so i could now get on with taking the photos and manipulating them on photoshop.

What research could you have carried out that would have proved more useful?

OUGD103-Speaking from experience

Brief:
How to manage money and budget.

Who needs to know?
First year students joining graphic design at leeds college of art.

What do they need to know?
How to learn from another students mistakes with money.

Why do they need to know?
Everyone knows students struggle with money so my idea is to show other students mistakes i made with money so they can ovoid doing it themselves. I will do this by making a receipt that will list everything i spent my money on when i first became a student in Leeds. It will be type based only.

What will they respond to?
It should be light hearted and funny. They shouldn't take it too seriously.

What research is required?
Primary
Questionnaire asking other students about their struggles with money and what they found they spent most of their money on.
Phone bills, bank statements, rent bills.

Secondary
Books, internet.

OUGD103-Speaking from experience

Brief:
How to handle awkward, annoying flatmates who lie a lot.

Who needs to know?
First year students joining graphic design at leeds college of art.

What do they need to know?
How to handle a flatmate(s) who in unclean, loud, annoying, lies a lot etc. in a light hearted comic way.

Why do they need to know?
A lot of students end up living with a flatmate(s) you do not agree with or clash with so it is a funny way of handling it.

What will they respond to?
It should be comical and easy going so they should just find it funny and an easy read.

What research is required?
Primary
Questionnaire asking students their stories about flatmates.

Secondary
Look at existing books for students, websites, funny illustrations.
Search websites for students.

OUGD103-Communication is a virus

Issues raised:
Too much text on the first pages, too much going on, confusing.
Can we use the stock for the envelope as it is different from the stock of the book.

Action to be taken:
De clutter the first page- too much type.

General feedback:
Like the mixture and variety of typefaces. Animals, drawing, illustrations work well with type and colour.

OUGD103-Communication is a virus

The Brief:
To produce a graphics response that engages with a specific audience. The response should consider the context and environment in which you aim for it to be delivered. This will be identified as part of the initial concept proposal.

Considerations:
Analyse and, identify and use existing means of distributions in order to select an appropriate method of communication.

Target audience:
Young children and parents.

Tone of voice:
Easy, simple, for children.
The tone of voice should be appropriate to your content, the audience to which your work will be delivered and the content in which it will be viewed or delivered.

Background:
What do you want to say? How do you intend to say it? What language would be appropriate?
'Get people to read more', invite people to an event for 'world book day' encouraging children to read more after school hours and parents to read to children.

Will the content be communicated primarily through type or image? If it is both what will be the relationship between the two?
We will use mainly image and simple, easy type as its based on children.

Mandatory requirements:
A limited colour pallet, two colours plus stock, will allow for reproduction of your designs across a range of media. We will research into existing children's books/illustrations to see what kind of colours are usually used.

The response should remain within legal boundaries. NB- Any activities that may cause damage, personal offence or involve acts of an illegal nature are not encouraged or supported by the deliver of this brief. You must seek appropriate permission for all activities associated with this brief.

The problems should be resolved by the deadline below. However, if we have plans to extend the scope and ambition of the response beyond this deadline we will include these proposals in our presentation.

Deliverables
Design development sheets.

Concept/proposal appropriate to our idea.

OUGD104-Visual language-what is line

The brief:
Using manipulation of line, frame, format, media and colour, produce a body of work that visually investigates the following definition of the word 'line'.

"A connected series of events, actions, or developments."

Considerations:
Develop, document and catalogue a range of investigative and experimental approaches in response to the above quote. Also document the application and evaluation of media.

Target audience:

Tone of voice:

Background:
One of the numerous definitions of drawing (and recording drawing) is the act of defining the outlines of an object against a background, using a wide variety of tools and techniques. It generally involves making/applying marks to a surface.

How do you construct a line?
Draw, trace, add/remove, layer, dot, drag...

What media do you use?
Traditional drawing materials, photography etc...?

What format are you working to? Is your frame constant or changing?

Mandatory requirements:
The work presented must represent the time given to complete this brief. Set time aside to draw regularly. There is no point rushing this at the end of the module, time management is essential. Your investigation should become part of your everyday life and developing design practise. Will be based upon a workshop(s) previously undertaken in the visual language module.

Deliverables:
A set of notebooks/sketchbooks and drawings/images in an organised, rational, and considered format.

Studio deadline:

The brief
To produce a visually considered double page spread based upon your subject matter. (Richard)

Consideratons
Think visually, Explore layout/type/image/colour. How they relate to each other.

Target audience
Richard

Tone of voice
Easy going, funny

Background
One of the problems with software is that everyone has access to it but not everyone knows how to use it creatively. Adobe InDesign is primarily used for for the generation of compelling print layout and breaking down the barriers between online and offline publishing. The possibilites of which can be used a sa springboard for further visual research.

Mandatory reuirements
All work should be suppoerted by a broad range of viual investigation in the form of design sheets of workbooks. The final image is double spread. Landscape a3 stock 237x380 (2cm bleed)

Deliverables
One double page spread

End of module evaluation

What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you

think you have applied them?

For this module i used a range of different media such as scanning hand drawn and painted

images, spray painted images, and ink images and then scanned them into the macs to

manipulate them further. I think i developed my skills by doing this a lot as i used software such

as illustrator, which i wasn't very confident using at first, and also photoshop and in design.

I used alot of photography in this module, for example for categorising my 100 objects.

I also learnt how to make a PDF presentation for printing the photoshop postcards which i have

never done before. Now i have the skills to do this i think i will use it a lot more.

I've also developed my skills in bookmaking as i had never done this before. After learning a few

different stitches for binding the books i went on to use the pamphlet stitch to bind the book i

made for the 100 brief.

2. What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have

they informed your design development process?

From my original research i had found a lot of facts and opinions from a range of different sources

such as books, newspapers, interviews and the internet. The facts were so different and varied

so when it came to making my book (and after receiving feedback in a crit) i decided to narrow

the facts and opinions to just facts and also create categories for them to go in. I made a category

page at the start of the book and referenced the pages to these categories along with a page

references where i got my facts from.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise

on these?

I think i did quite well in finding a large range of research and using this research in my work.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these

more fully?

When making my final book i think i could have crafted it better but considering it was the first time

i had made a book it wasn't too bad. When it came to cutting out the pages for my book i found

that they didn't all fit together perfectly so some had to be cut down to size a bit more. I realised

once i had done this i should have left a small blank border, and not had type so close to the

edges, incase mistakes were made.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to

gain from doing these?

1. I would have asked for more help when making the final book. If i had done this my book
would have looked more professional and well crafted.
2. I would have sorted the pages into their categories before printing them so that they would
have sat together in the book like chapters. This also would have made the book look more
professional and would have made more sense.
3. In the group project for what if... i found it hard to communicate with the whole group and decide
who was going to work on what part of the brief. Next time i would make sure we all sat down
together and discussed the work. By doing this we would of also had more time to develop the
work and research as no one would be left not knowing what was going on.
4. Also for the what if brief we found that from our research that the problem we came up with
wasn't clear and the solution didn't work. If we had spent more time on the research we could have
come up with a problem that could of been solved.
5. For some parts of this module i found myself not having enough time to cut things out such as
photographs and the crafting products so next time i would make sure i printed things out in advance
to enable myself to have more time cutting them out.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

Visual language- OUGD104

Book - rationale
Brief: (what is the problem you intend to solve?)
To make a hotdog fold book based on the photographs i took from the 'Art of travel' brief. I intend to use different materials and media. 20 of these books need to be produced, all exactly the same. These books will be on sale at the book fair.

Who needs to know? (who is your audience)
People who attend the book fair. People come from around the world so the book needs to be eye catching and different.

What do they need to know?
What my book is based on. What is the subject? i.e. blue Why is this interesting? Composition, objects, shades of blue etc.

What will they respond to? (how will they connect/understand the outcome?)
If they like the book, they can buy it. The book should be interesting to look at.

What research is required? (what do you need to know in order to complete this brief to the fullest potential?)
Primary: Photographs, mark making, binding, mixed media, drawing, painting, printing methods, stitching, fabric, stock, cut out, collage. Look at old fashioned books.

Secondary: Internet, look at books, others artists who manipulate existing books, artists who use a range of different materials in book making. Whether they use type and whether its necessary for me to use type or not.

Product and packaging
I have made the decision to go with packaging as I'm thinking of doing a album sleeve booklet and the packaging i.e some sort of box for it to come in like a box set.

Who is the audience and how do you intend to engage with them?
My audience is intended for older people who used to buy vinyl and also the younger generation interested in vinyl and CD album art.

What is the function of the product- is it supposed to inform/educate/document/entertain/instruct? What has informed this decision?
My product is supposed to inform, entertain and educate people about different albums and when they were made.

How will the audience interact with the product:
